Plasma Apparatus for Biological Decontamination and Sterilization
- Summary
- The atmospheric plasma is stable and self-sustaining in the region of the conductors and typically invisible to the naked eye except under low light conditions. The plasma sterilizes any contaminants surrounding the object it comes in contact with rendering it sterile multi-modally, through high heat, ionization and ultraviolet light. Thus, contaminates not sterilized by one method may be sterilized by another, unlike mono-modal systems. As the plasma is generated through electricity, if one were to touch an object contained within a plasma field they would receive a mild electric shock, but the low current power of micro-amps requirements result in safe low amperage fields. However, due to possible static shocks, our team envisions a device that contains this technology within a shielded container that can prevent such an incident from happening with various safety measures in place.

- Detailed Technology Description
- Use of cold plasma technology for biological decontamination and sterilization of any material without damaging it.
- *Abstract
-
None
- *Background
- Our technology utilizes the sterilization properties of cold plasma which is generated through an electrical current passing between two conductors. The length and width of the line of plasma between these conductors can be lengthened, shortened, or widened as necessary to accommodate the size of device to be sterilized and formed in any shape necessary. This technology is unique because it can safely and effectively sterilize any material without damaging it. Existing sterilization technology is limited in this area because certain delicate materials can be destroyed or eroded by current sterilization methods which utilize high temperatures, steam or toxic chemicals.
- *Stage of Development
- This technology is currently in the proof of concept stage of development. Testing is currently being done in one of OSU's laboratories to determine the efficacy of this sterilization process.
