Skin Marking Device and Suture Holder

Summary
Lead Inventors: Kaushal Shah, MD and Joseph Habboushe, MDProblem or Unmet Need:Despite the need for accurate and precise placement of sutures, physicians currently have no means of marking suture positions that are equidistant from one another. Suture needles that are inserted too far from or too close to a wound or incision edge may cause scarring or tearing, respectively. In addition, needle sticks and contamination are problems in procedures involving suture stitching. These accidents occur because the needle often dangles while tying a knot. This technology consists of methods and devices for precise skin marking and suture holding. The skin marking device allows users to indicate suture needle insertion points around the periphery of an incision or wound, or to measure and denote the perimeter of a wound or growth for biopsy. Features of the skin marking device include (1) the ability to adjust a specified distance (measured in millimeters or inches), (2) the ability to adjust spacing between marks or stitches, (3) the ability to vary marking shape (e.g. elliptical vs. tear-shaped), and (4) the ability to make multiple marks simultaneously. The suture holding device allows users to secure the needle(s) during suturing and facilitates loading of the needle on the needle driver. Potential benefits of this device include (1) reducing the chance for accidental needle sticks and contamination, (2) allowing for easy disposal when suturing is complete, (3) allowing for easier reloading of the needle driver in any orientation, and (4) improving the speed of suturing.
Technology Benefits
Precise and accurate marking of needle insertion points prior to suturing or biopsy Ability to define spacing, shape, and distance of marks Ability to educate or guide residents/physician's assistants/technicians General practitioners and emergency physicians can perform plastic surgeon-level wound closure or biopsy with confidence Use of precision tool will engender confidence in the patient for the physician and procedure Preventing accidental needle sticks and contamination Improving speed of suturing
Technology Application
Marking suture needle insertion points around the periphery of an incision or wound Measuring and marking the perimeter of a wound or growth for biopsy thereby exacting the desired "margin" of skin needed to be removed Securing suture needles when stitching More senior physicians can guide or teach residents or physician's assistants in proper wound closure prior to initiating the procedure
