Techniques for digital image and video segmentation and compression are described.The method and system for performing object-based encoding of video information comprises of a depth sensing camera. The depth sensing camera is capable of generating in real-time both frames of video information and depth information. An object segmentation circuit received depth information for generating object identification signals. An encoder generates a compressed video signal which substantially corresponds to the objects identified by the object identification signals.The method provides techniques that directly utilize three-dimensional shape information in the video compression process, both in the case of field or frame based compression techniques and object-based compression techniques.
