- *Background
- Strain sensing is one of themost critical aspects of structural health monitoring and non-destructiveevaluation. Strain sensors that can measure considerable strains over largeareas of structures are needed. Traditional resistive metal foil strain gaugesensors, though low-cost and easy to install, have limitations such the needfor a physical connection between the sensing element and the interrogation unit.Fiber-optic-based sensors have also receivedconsiderable attention since they are very compact and can provide very highresolution. However, they have inherent problems such as fragility andsusceptibility to damage. In both these types of strain sensors, the physicalconnection between the sensor and the interrogation unit is also prone tocorrosion and fracture. In addition, wireless monitoring of strains in theabsence of a clear line of sight and/or physical connection to the structure ofinterest is impossible using conventional resistive or capacitive straingauges. Conventional strain gauges often have active elements that deform whena load is applied. The performance of these strain sensors tend todeteriorate/drift over time since the fatigue life and properties of themetallic element determines the ultimate performance.
