- *Background
- Sealants are employed extensively in construction, automotive, electronics and aerospace industries to prevent the penetration of gases or liquids. However, sealants themselves are susceptible to damage by various environmental stresses arising due to mechanical, chemicalor thermal conditions. OLED devices, and PV solar cells are susceptible to damage uponexposure to hot and humid environmental conditions. This reduces the activelifetime of the systems. Conventional repairmethods such as welding or patchingare not effective in delicate electronic applications such as organic light emitting devices (OLED) and photovoltaic (PV) solar cells. Further, catastrophicfailure of the components may result if invisiblemicro cracks are not detected in a timely fashion. Currently, rigid or flexible organic and inorganic coatings such as poly (methylmethacrylate) (PMMA) or PMMA-polyolefin are used to support and provideprotection to the underlying semiconductor layers in electronic devices. Thesecoatings, however, may themselves be susceptible to formation of cracks ormicro scratches upon prolonged exposure to unfavorable environmentalconditions.
