- Detailed Technology Description
- Aprocess to synthesize ammonia at ambient conditions.
- *Abstract
-
Thisprocess achieves an improvement of catalytic activity by refining themorphology and the chemical speciation of catalysts.
- *Background
- Ammoniais a chemical commonly used in industrial and agricultural applications such ascleaning agents, fertilizers, and water treatment. Ammonia is also theprecursor to most nitrogen-containing compounds. Due to the many uses ofammonia, its synthesis is the world’s second highest energy consuming chemicalprocess, thus making its production dependent on ample supplies of energy, primarily natural gas. Sustainable production of ammonia is desirable because ofits critical role in agriculture and other processes. Ammonia is typicallysynthesized through the Haber–Boschprocess, which requires extremepressures and temperatures for nitrogen gas fixation. The alternative method isto capture and convert nitrogen gas through heterogeneous and electrochemicalfixation; however, the activity of the catalysts formed using this method isextremely low. There exists a present market need for a process with improvedcatalytic activity that successfully synthesizes ammonia without requiring highlevels of energy.
