-
The technology describedhere will provide a new class of fungicides that are designed to be specificfor pathogenic fungi and will not adversely affect other fungi, plants, oranimals. This invention describes the use of double-stranded RNAs (dsRNAs) to inhibitthe growth of plant parasitic fungi. The dsRNAs can be applied to plants in twoways: 1) by a transgenic method, whereby the plant expresses a dsRNA to inhibitthe growth or infection of the fungus in the plant; or 2) the dsRNA can beapplied topically to plant leaves, such that the when fungal spores adhere tothe plant and attempt to infect the plant cells, they encounter dsRNA and theirgrowth is inhibited or the fungal infection is reduced.
