Transtibial Prosthesis With Passive Variable Ankle Stiffness

Detailed Technology Description
Universityof Delaware researchers Nenno and Wetzel have invented the dynamic rate-dependent, elastically-deformabledevice which can be stretched and recovered at low elongation rates. This deviceconsists of one or morefilaments and a fluid that substantially fills the remaining volume inside theelastically-deformable confinement member. This dynamicligament of Nenno and Wetzel is combined with an existing or modifiedtranstibial prosthesis. Thus the technology here is a prosthesis that providesvariable ankle stiffness to the wearer via a shear thickening fluidligament/tendon. This device will be the only rate-responsive prosthesis in themarket that will allow for variable ankle stiffness without an external powersource and thus would better emulate non-physiological gait than existingprosthesis.
