Ion-Selective Ceramic-Membrane-Based All-Aqueous Redox-Flow Batteries
- Detailed Technology Description
- This inventioninvolves a novel concept of all-aqueous redox-flow batteries. The concept ofall-aqueous redox-flow batteries is structured with one inorganic ceramicmembrane as battery separator that selectively conducts metal ions (e.g. Li+and Na+), and two aqueous solutions as negative and positive electrolytes offlow battery. The use of metal ion-conducting ceramic membranes essentiallyallows for the great freedom of combining acidic electrolyte and alkalineelectrolyte in one flow battery cell yet without suffering from eitherneutralization of supporting electrolytes (e.g., acid and base) or crossover ofredox species. This invention enables the design and deployment of manyfeatured redox-flow batteries with ultrahigh cell voltage (e.g., alkalineZn-acidic Ce all-aqueous flow battery) and/or ultralow system cost (e.g., alkalineZn-acidic Fe all-aqueous flow battery), promising for efficient and economicalenergy storage.
