Syringol-Based Monomers for Tuning Polymer Properties
- Detailed Technology Description
- Scientists at theUniversity of Delaware have developed a new lignin-based monomer, specificallysyringol methacrylate, which is completely unique in comparison to the othermonomers present in the literature as well as other lignin-based monomers. Syringol’schemical structure would lead one skilled in the art of polymers to believethat it’s too bulky to be polymerized easily, yet we have demonstrated otherwise. Most importantly, the resulting polymers can be polymerized in a controlledfashion, have a high Tg, and imparts significant solvent resistance, much like hardwood lignin itself.
