- Due toincreasing safety issues with liquid based electrolytes, there has been a greatinterest in the field of solid-state lithium batteries with a solvent freeelectrolyte. The invention involves novel block copolymer electrolytes withtapered interfaces between copolymer blocks. Block copolymers are promisingmaterials for conducting applications due to their ability to self assembleinto ordered nanostructures. In this invention, a tapered interface betweenpure block is generated to decouple polymer interfacial interactions frommolecular weight and chemical constituents. Thus, tapered block copolymers canbe used to create high molecular weight polymer electrolytes, providingimproved mechanical properties, while retaining the similar processability aslow-molecular-weight materials. Additionally, the salt-doped tapered blockcopolymers exhibit comparable ionic conductivity relative to salt-doped diblockcopolymers. This indicated that it is possible to modify the copolymercomposition profile between two blocks, manipulating the polymer interfacialinteractions, while maintaining the ability for ion transport.
