Passive Swing-Assist Device for Gait Training of Spinal-Cord Injury Patients

- Eachyear approximately 11,000 individuals suffer spinal cord injury in the UnitedStates. Currently there are more than 250,000 individuals experiencing theeffects of such injuries in the form of an impaired gait. The passiveswing-assist orthosis device described in this patent application can be aneffective tool for use in gait training of spinal-cord injury patients. Through simulation of a swinging leg,spring parameters on an externally applied device are optimized to provide thepropulsion force required by a subject during walking.
