Diagnostic Tools for Herbicide Resistance in Weeds

Summary
Purdue University researchers have identified a set of differentially expressed genes that are specifically down regulated in glyphosate resistant plants when compared to glyphosate susceptible plants. By utilizing specially designed primers for these particular genes, the researchers can easily identify the resistant plants. This will allow for more targeted and precise herbicide treatment protocols and more sustainable weed management.

*Abstract

*Background
Giant ragweed is an annual plant that persists in disturbed areas and croplands. Farmers often use glyphosate, the most widely used herbicide in the world, for control of giant ragweed. Repeated use of glyphosate; however, has resulted in the occurrence of glyphosate resistant (R) giant ragweed populations in Indiana. It is becoming increasingly more time consuming and costly to remove the resistant giant ragweed because there is no current method to detect resistance prior to applying the herbicide.
