Reaction Monitoring using Mass Spectrometry

Summary
Researchers at Purdue University have developed a new technique for real-time reaction monitoring that is able to overcome the limitations of similar systems. Using a new ionization technique, this system can avoid electrical contact between the sample solution and the ionization hardware and analyze both positive and negative ions in one spray cycle. It also has increased sample economy and can be used with inert gas to prevent unwanted reaction with air.

*Abstract

*Background
Monitoring a chemical reaction in real time allows for better quality assurance and purity of the final product, as well as earlier detection of problems and information for optimizing the reaction conditions. The chemical specificity, sensitivity, and speed of mass spectrometry makes it a great fit for this kind of real-time analysis and several ionization techniques tried to adapt it to the role. Electrospray ionization, low temperature plasma ionization, and others have been used, but each exhibit weaknesses, such as not being capable of on-line monitoring, limitations on the compositions of the samples, and open-to-air setups that restrict the reaction types.
