-
Northwestern University researchers have developed a new magnetic nanostructure that can be used to detect and destroy β-amyloid protein oligomers, which are a hallmark of Alzheimer's disease. The magnetic nanostructures can be used for imaging, as the nanoparticle acts as an MRI contrast agent. Furthermore, the nanoparticles can be activated by exposure to radiofrequency, and have been shown to release heat and inactivate the β-amyloid oligomers without damage to the neurons. The antibody conjugated to the nanoparticle confers the specificity of the nanostructures. Therefore, this same therapeutic and diagnostic method could be applied to other diseases with the modification of the antibody type. Most importantly, the nanostructures can be synthesized in a single step process, which makes them an extremely attractive diagnostic and therapeutic reagent.
