- *Abstract
-
Perylenes are a class of polycyclic organic molecules, which have mostly garnered attention due to their flourescence. While perylenes had been used in biological imaging and organic photoconductors, their applications were limited because of their insolubility and lack of methods for efficient modification. The Stoddart group at Northwestern University has developed two methods for installing handles onto the starting molecule, which allow for further modifications, as well as an oxidation technique for aromatization of the perylene dications into diazaperopyrenium dications (DDs). The resulting class of molecules have wide ranging biological and industrial applications. Most notably, one of the DDs has demonstrated toxicity against several cancer cell lines, and others are powerful catalysts. In addition, the novel molecules generated by the Stoddart group are soluble in water and inexpensive and simple to generate.
