Quantification of Heavy Metals in Dried Blood Spots

Technology Benefits
Minimally-invasive No requirement for a physician or phlebotomist Specimens can be easily shipped in flat envelopes at room temperature Blood can be collected by finger or heel prick Samples are protected from contamination before and after blood collection Dried blood mass provides a more precise estimate of blood volume Able to measure lead exposure to 5 ppm
Detailed Technology Description
A "field-friendly," non-invasive method for quantifying human exposure to heavy metals, especially in children.#healthcare #diagnostictool #medicaldevice #diagnosticsandmeasurement
*Abstract

Northwestern researchers have developed a "field-friendly" and non-invasive approach to determining environmental exposure to heavy metals. Drops of whole blood are collected on pre-treated filter paper following a simple finger or heel stick. The invention includes a dried blood spot (DBS) collection device and kit for quantifying heavy metal blood concentrations.
