Northwestern researchers developed a novel technologythat simulates electrical stimulation of the patient heart in order to identifythe risk of cardiac arrhythmias. Dependingon whether the heart tissue is scarred, impaired or normal, it allocateselectrical properties and then determines the electrical conductivityassociated with the image data. Once itidentifies scar tissue as hyper-enhanced areas in medical images with variableluminance thresholds and categorizes partially-viable myocardium as distinctfrom non-viable scar, the technology can create a 3D model of the patient’sheart using imaging data. The systemcapitalizes on the fact that the electrical properties of scar tissue are differentfrom those of normal tissue, such that the stimulation processor can actuallyprovide virtual electrical stimulation to the patient heart and then identifythe relative risk of heart impairment.
