Non-invasive biomedical imaging

Detailed Technology Description
Introduction There has been an increasing need for more effective ways in diagnosing cancer. Current, technologies are widely available for fluorescently labeling tumors; however, UV and visible light cannot penetrate living tissue. In addition, during a surgery there is a need for ensuring that the entire tumor has been removed with clean margins and that no tumor remnants have been left behind. Thus, there is a need for illuminating the tumors in a way that they become apparent even when they are covered by layers of tissue.  Description of Technology Michigan State University has developed a non-invasive biomedical imaging source that can be used for diagnosis before and during surgery. The methods in this technology use much simpler optics than those prescribed in two-photon imaging as well as methods included in the use of UV light, which can cause DNA damage and does not penetrate beyond a few layers of cells.  Key BenefitsDetect Cancer: localizes the cancer location within a 1 mm3.Determines bone density Performs optical mammography   ApplicationsCancer diagnosisBrain/cancer surgery – Robotic arm held system that positions the instrument without risk of touching the tissue Patent Status Patent pending Inventors Marcos Dantus Tech ID TEC2012-0069
