Homogeneous and uniform anodic film is essential for high capacitor performance. This technology provides for elimination of micro and macro defects in the dielectric film separating the anode and cathode in a capacitor. Through a novel rapid solidification process (RSP), glass forming beryllium alloys near eutectic compositions have been developed for electrolytic capacitor anodes. These alloys have a glass forming ability which enables formation of a homogeneous amorphous phase upon RSP. Anodic oxide formed on the amorphous substrate is dense and defect-free (i.e., continuous), because of a homogenous amorphous phase of the substrate. As a result, the anodic film has excellent energy density and low leakage current per unit area, enabling it to compete with the dielectrics of the best commercial Ta and Nb capacitors.
