Dr. Susann Brady-Kalnay's laboratory has demonstrated that local delivery of Cdc42 and Rac1 promotes axonal outgrowth after spinal cord injury. Activated Rho GTPases, when added to neurons, cause them to migrate through inhibitory environments that normally block neuronal regeneration. Further, the technology demonstrated growth in two-dimensional models through chondroitin sulfate proteoglycan (CSPG) inhibitory regions.Extensive in vitro data and in vivo work with hydrogels and other localized delivery systems have validated neuronal regeneration for spinal cord injury and other applications. The technology is represented by issued patent US-7,749,496.
