Nanostructuring of Polymers and Polymer Composites Using Pressure
- Technology Benefits
- The procedure:ΓÇóIs simple and inexpensiveΓÇóEnables creation of distinct polymer nano features that are capable of altering key cellular functions without using pharmaceutical agentsΓÇóIs effectively used while a polymer is being extruded, cast molded, or producedΓÇóEffectively changes the surface energy of a medical device, which in turn changes surface protein adsorption eventsΓÇóIs capable of decreasing the bacterial functions by altering nano scale surface roughness aloneΓÇóIs free from potential side effects as associated with use of other therapeutic agents such as drugsΓÇóIs effectively used during medical device or post medical device production, significantly enhancing its lifetimeΓÇóWould be commercially useful for fabrication of infection free medical devices such as catheters, endotracheal tubes, orthopedic implants, vascular stents, pacemaker leads, and cartilage implants

- *Abstract
-
Bacterial infection is one of the biggest problems associated with currently used medical components and/or devices. None of the existing technologies/mechanisms have been effective in fully addressing this issue. This invention discloses a novel procedure for development of nanostructured features on polymer and/or polymer composites using pressure, effectively altering key cellular functions associated with such polymeric surfaces.
