The inventors have developed a hematologic cell line that contributes to a better understanding of normal and malignant hematology. Their AML14 cell lineΓÇÖs AML14.3D10 subclone has become the standard cell line model for the study of eosinophils, white blood cells in the human immune system responsible for combating multicellular parasites and certain infections in vertebrates. Along with mast cells, these cells control mechanisms associated with allergy and asthma. The cell lines were established from leukemic populations and most commonly exhibit features analogous to those found in normal immature cells of the myeloid lineage. Some of these cell lines can be induced to a more mature phenotypical state through chemical or biologic exposure. The AML14.3D10 cell line has been used to obtain important new information relevant to eosinophil biology.
