Treatment of Ischemic Stroke to Prevent Neurodegeneration
- Technology Benefits
- - Simulated human tests after stroke: grasping, holding, voluntary hand touching and leaning- Results in almost complete functional recovery - Treatment can be administered up to 26 hours after an event- Uses FDA Drugs: Fluoxetine (Prozac, Sarafem), Simvastatin (Zocor) - A follow on treatment, which ~90% of ischemic stroke patients do not receive- Safer than thrombolytic therapy, which produces negative side effects 1 in 15 patients, some cases being fatal

Title: Multiple lead method for deep brain stimulation
Usefulness: Multiple lead method for deep brain stimulation
Summary: For treatment of movement-related disorder e.g. ataxia, blepharospasm, chorea, dysphonia, dystonic disorder, gait disorder, multiple sclerosis, myoclonus, spasticity, tardive dyskinesia, tics, Parkinson's disease, Huntington's disease.
Novelty: Deep brain stimulation (DBS) method for treatment of movement-related disorder, involves applying electrical stimulation to at least one of electrical leads under conditions to eliminate or ameliorate symptom of movement-related disorder

- *Abstract
-
The inventor has developed a novel approach to the treatment of ischemic stroke, lack of blood to the brain, and traumatic brain injury, which may lead to neurodegeneration. The method is superior to many others as it employs the use of existing FDA approved pharmaceuticals and may be administered up to 26 hours after the ΓÇ£eventΓÇØ. Laboratory results have been able to replicate recovery rates as high as 85-90% of original motor control based upon the Montoya Staircase. Rat data is available.
