- Alum is the only approved adjuvant for human use in the United States; however, it produces only humoral immune response. The inulin adjuvants can stimulate both arms of the immune system (humoral and cellular), is physically stable at ambient temperatures, is biocompatible and biodegradable, can be used in combination with other immunostimulatory and/or immunomodulatory agents, and be administered in many different routs of administrations, and for many different ailments.

- Inulin is a nontoxic, water-soluble polysaccharide with a molecular mass ranging from 3000 to 16,000Da. SDSU researchers have prepared nano/micro particle formulations with a water-soluble form of inulin and its synthetic derivative inulin acetate and used the formulations as immunopotentiators.

The goal of vaccination is to provide long-term protection against infection by generating a strong immune response to the administered antigen. Vaccines often require the addition of immune stimulatory agents called adjuvants to boost the potency and longevity of specific immune response to antigens. The next generation of recombinant vaccines will require not only very strong and long lasting antibody responses but also potent cell mediated immune responses.
