- *Abstract
-
This invention describes the synthesis of a novel injectable bone cement comprising calcium phosphate and nanostructured calcium phosphate based carriers of proteins, cells, plasmid DNA and drugs. The novelty is the ability to generate these cements under physiological conditions of pH = 7.4, T = 25C, P = 1 atm so that cells, signaling molecules and other biological components can be introduced without resulting in any adverse effects. These cements can be made in the bulk as fully dense cement materials or can be fabricated as porous constructs with controlled porosity. At the same time, the smart cements can be generated as injectable pastes that can be delivered into the defect site in the clinic for treatment of bone related traumatic injuries and defects.
