- This innovation describes a strategy to optically code the micron-sized beads with up to 10,000 or more luminescence identities. Though this opens up potential applications in many broad areas, such as photonics, nanotechnology and environmental engineering, a critical application has been identified to conjugate these microspheres to 10,000 species of capture bio-molecules, so that it can simultaneously analyse up to 10,000 molecular species of proteins and nucleic acids in a single test. This will enable the introduction of more comprehensible and affordable assays, thus dramatically extending our ability to quantify biological systems.
