Summary
Tissue engineering based on stem cells and matrices have major difficulties due to the inability of 3D cellular structures (cells on scaffold) to integrate, survive and repair the damaged target tissues. Injected single cells also survive poorly and can hardly integrate in tissues. Efficient transfer of progenitor cells without affecting their survival is a key factor in any cell therapy based approaches.
Fibrin Microbeads (FMBs) are comprised from dense highly cross-linked fibrin. The beads could be sterilized and serve as a single multifunctional modality for isolation, expansion in 3D conditions, differentiation and delivery of mesenchymal stem cells and other matrix dependent cells. Cells on FMB could be induced to differentiate into different phenotypes, such as bone and cartilage. We have also demonstrated the utility of FMBs for prolonged delivery (two weeks) of Mesenchymal cells in sealed tubes at room temperature.
