Despite their widespread use and application, the preparation of tailor-made ligand complexes with existing technology is laborious and does not allow for rapid, simple synthesis. These methods are unable to allow monomeric counterparts to be selectively coupled to form a pincer-type ligand frame which restricts how much they can be optimized. This technology offers a conceptually new and operationally simple approach to an efficient preparation of a novel family of ligands and corresponding catalysts. This exceptionally high-yield method results in straightforward, selective synthesis of easily purified hetero-tridentate ligands with broad functional group tolerance that exhibit extraordinary catalytic activity.The novelty of this invention is twofold: in the ability to selectively couple monomeric units for the formation of pincer-type ligands, and in the unique triazole-based ligand which is formed. The former utilizes "click" chemistry and the simple selective combination of complementary monomeric units to allow for efficient optimization of a wide range of transition metal catalyzed processes with countless applications in commercial chemical synthesis. The latter offers a catalyst far superior to what is currently being used in many commercial processes for the production of valuable materials in practically all areas of chemistry. Specifically, the catalytic effectiveness of this type of ligand has been demonstrated on the Heck reaction, a crucial and ubiquitous reaction in the chemical industry.
