Biomedical Imaging in a Portable Unilateral NMR Scanner (Ramot)

Summary

A diagnostic technique is under development for characterization of skin aging with high resolution deep-skin profiling. The technique is based on existing low-field unilateral NMR scanners.
Mobile unilateral NMR scanners measure NMR parameters (T1, T2, diffusion coefficient, spin density) and facilitate depth profiling of samples with a high resolution (∆Z≈ 20-30 µm). This technology is currently used for non-destructive testing. We are developing a method to use the acquired and derived NMR parameters to characterize specific skin layers, based on their thickness, and their biochemical content. The 1D imaging/profiling data is incorporated into an algorithm which identifies changes in the skin properties that are associated with aging.Skin aging is a physiological process affecting all individuals, creating great concern and discomfort for a considerable part of the aging population. There is a need for a non-invasive method for reliable, low-cost depth characterization of the aging skin. Such a method should allow quantification of the 'physiological age' of a skin, and assessment of the temporary or the permanent effect of cosmetic creams or of other cosmetic applications. Such a method, if affordable, could be used by cosmetic clinics as well as by dermatological clinics and labs.

Technology Benefits

The technology is non-invasive, non-destructive and non-radiation.
Desktop, single-sided NMR scanners are affordable for small businesses.
The systems are small, portable and suitable for small labs, offices, clinics and shops.
The small size and the low magnetic field prevent demanding infrastructure considerations (i.e. no special construction, electric power, magnetic/RF shielding).
The technique can provide both biochemical and density information.
The penetration depth covers the entire skin layers and the depth resolution can distinguish between the sub layers of the skin in a scale of a few tens of microns.

Technology Application

A Helsinki approval for a dermatological project is in place, approved for collaboration with the dermatological department in RAMBAM Hospital for clinical tests and development.
