Heat Reflective Coating on Metal Substrates

Summary
Dark-coloured coatings with strong near infrared (NIR) reflectance and adhesion strength to metal substrate, like aluminium, have been developed. The coatings show dark or black colours as they absorb most of the visible light. However, they display strong reflectance in the NIR spectrum. In contrast, the common dark- or black-coloured coatings not only absorb visible light, but also radiation in the IR range. This coating technology that has been developed can be used on aluminium or other metal substrates, of various buildings and vehicles, to reflect IR radiation. It exhibits strong adhesion to metal substrates, such as (but not limited to) aluminium, even without any surface pre-treatment. Besides, it also effectively reflects NIR light, thus reducing the solar heat load and increasing energy efficiency. This coating technology is therefore expected to have a wide range of applications in energy saving fields such as on window frames of buildings, car and ship coatings.
Technology Benefits
Reduction in heat entry into buildingsReduction in energy demand from air-conditioning, especially in the tropical regionReduction in air pollution due to low energy consumptionLonger life-cycle of coated substrate due to reduced polymer degradationSelection of dark colours
Technology Application
This technology is expected to be applicable in the following industries:Construction: For new and existing window frames in the tropical regionAutomotive and logistics: For vehicle bodies (cars, trucks, etc.)Marine & offshore: For oil tanks, marine (boats and ships)
