Electronics Pill Box Project
- Summary
- This project is for the design and prototyping of an electronic pillbox for Tuberculosis (TB) patients in the United Kingdom. It features an audible reminder to alert the patient to take his or her medication at the prescribed time. Once the medication has been taken, the electronic pillbox will post a message to the patient s social media profile. Caregivers who have subscribed to the patient s social media page will be alerted and they can provide encouragement to the patient by liking or responding to the post. The electronic pillbox will generate a timestamp whenever the tray (located at the bottom opening) containing the patient s medication is withdrawn. Hence, the exact timing of the patient s consumption of medication can be recorded. Through the pillbox s built-in GSM module, it is possible to send the timestamp information to UK s National Health System (NHS) for recording. This allows the medical practitioner to monitor the patient s medication intake remotely. TB is a contagious disease. Hence, it is important for the patient to strictly adhere to the medication schedule in order to prevent the disease from spreading to the wider community.
- Technology Benefits
- Patients are able to control their medical ailments with compliance to medicine regime.Doctors are able to monitor their patient compliance to their medicine regime.
- Technology Application
- Monitoring of medicine regime compliance for diabetic patientsPillbox for patients who need to regularly consume a combination of medicine to treat high blood pressure
- Detailed Technology Description
- 1) Feedback system enables data to be tabulated and computed. The feedback also serves as the patient s medical record.2) The pillbox incorporates low power consumption design and is modular to include 4G and wireless modules.3) The pillbox is modular to take up to 7 cartridges for patient s weekly dosage, and each cartridge contains the daily dosage for a patient. The patient s caregiver pre-packs the medicine before loading it into the electronic pillbox.4) The pillbox features an automatic indexing cartridge system where the next in line cartridge is loaded after the first cartridge is removed from the pillbox. The empty cartridge is loaded back into the pillbox after the patient has consumed the medicine.
