BenGuard - A Vial Safety Cap for Prevention of Errors in Insulin Delivery

Summary
Patients who have diabetes mellitus may require insulin therapy during the course of their stay in the hospital. Insulin has a narrow therapeutic range requiring precise dose adjustments with careful administration and monitoring. Errors can lead to adverse consequences for patients, such as prolonged hospital stay, severe disability, and even death. A key risk point is in withdrawing the correct amount of insulin from the vial. The insulin vials currently used allow access by both insulin syringes and regular syringes although only insulin syringes should be used as it is more finely calibrated (eg 100 units of insulin is equivalent to 1 ml using the normal syringe). BenGuard is a vial safety cap that is specifically configured for use with only insulin syringes and prevents the use of wrong syringes to withdraw insulin from the vial.
Technology Benefits
By allowing only pre-specified syringes to be used to withdraw insulin from the vial, BenGuard increases medication safety and improves safety for healthcare workers by preventing needle stick incidents when drawing medication from the vial.
Technology Application
This vial safety cap can be used wherever insulin needs to be used eg hospital, clinics, nursing home, home etc.
Detailed Technology Description
BenGuard is specially configured to ensure that the appropriate syringe is used as it prevents the use of wrong syringes. Another safety feature of BenGuard is in preventing needle stick mishaps when filling the syringe with medication. BenGuard s enclosure is configured to surround the needle of the syringe and ensures that the seal of the vial remains sterile. It also allows the cap of the vial to be cleaned prior to being pierced by the syringe to avoid contamination. The design of the safety cap includes a holding portion that is designed to prevent rolling on a flat surface. In addition, it provides a greater surface area for gripping by the user for a more stable hold.
