Ultra-Light and Ultra-Warm Aerogel Fiber
- Summary
- Wool has become an increasingly important material in outdoor fashion and performance active wear, with benefits in providing comfort to users. However, when wool fabric is wetted in heavy rains, its high wet pick-up property will lead to poor thermal insulation performance. On the other hand, a thick and heavy knitted wool fabric is required for providing thermal insulation against extreme cold weather. These properties have made wool fiber an undesirable material for use in active wear under cold and extreme weather conditions.
By leveraging NAMI’s fabrication knowhow of functional fibers and sustainable aerogel including those cellulosic based, ultralight fibers with very high air porosity that are fabricated using sustainable resources are developed. These fibers, along with wool fibers, can be knitted into light-weighted fabric to provide extraordinary thermal insulation performance. This innovative material will complement the growth in market to the use of wool fibers for outdoor clothing and performance active wear in cold and extreme weather conditions.
- Technology Benefits
- - At least 20% lighter in weight than conventional performance active wear
- At least 25% warmer than 100% wool-based knit
- Maintenance of insulation performance even when wool fibers are wet
- Technology Application
- Outdoor fashion garment and performance active wear applications in cold and extreme weather conditions
