Ultra-Tough and Ultra-Strong Super Fiber
- Summary
- High-performance fibers having a high tensile strength are widely used for advanced applications in aerospace, automotive, building and military. However, the inherently low toughness of these fibers leads to poor ductility, low machinability, low fabricability and short lifetime which limit their use in a broad field of application. It is a great challenge to make a polymer fiber with high tensile strength and high toughness.
By leveraging NAMI’s experience in smart protection materials and polymer technology, a bionic super fiber with molecular structure similar to nature spider silk has been developed. Unique formulation and process developed for NAMI’s super fiber could allow the resulting fiber to be both strong and tough simultaneously. Production of the fiber can be scaled up in a cost-effective manner.
