The Mangrove Wetland for Sewage Treatment
- Summary
-
The present applied research aims to investigate the potential economic and ecological value of mangrove ecosystems and their conservation with the establishment of the 300-m2 constructed wetland for wastewater treatment and the Mangrove R & D Centre in Futian, Shenzhen. Our preliminary study showed that this mangrove system was able to effectively remove total suspended solids (TSS), TN, TP, NH4-N, PO4-P, BOD and COD. Based on our preliminary study, the removal rates of various pollutants are as follows: TSS 99%, TN 60~90%, TP 80~95%, NH4-N 70~90%, SP 90%, COD 40~80% and BOD 50~90%. The treatment efficiency varies with retention and flow patterns of the sewage, the minimum retention time is around 1 day for subsurface flow patterns. The constructed mangrove wetland, similar to or even better than conventional constructed wetlands, is a low-cost and effective approach for wastewater treatment, with many potential applications.
- Technology Benefits
-
• we have more than 20 years of experience in mangrove ecological and microbiological study, conservation and mangrove wetland-wastewater treatment; • our laboratory is equipped with the state-of-art facilities for scientific research, including a Hewlett-Packard gas chromatograph, Hitachi spectrophotometer, HACH water analysis workstation, etc. • we can provide our clients with a professional design of the constructed wetlands for wastewater treatment and perform a variety of water quality assays; • we are ready to transfer mangrove replanting technology; • the wetland project will become a display area of environmental conservation in Shenzhen for educating students and the public on the principles and effects of the new sewage treatment technology.
