Biodegradable Composite
- Summary
-
Environmental pollution induced by the accumulation of plastic wastes, also known as “white pollution” has becoming increasingly serious during recent years. Therefore the development of degradable materials to replace or decrease the usage of non-degradable plastics is of great importance from both scientific and technological points of view.
Rice husk (RH), as an agricultural residue, offers many potential advantages, e.g. abundant renewable source, low price, biodegradability, high specific strength and stiffness. The incorporation of RH fillers into polymer matrix can provide biodegradability by replacing partially the non-degradable polymer matrix, as well as reducing the production cost to a point where it is generally commercially desirable. We have successfully developed ecocomposites which can be processed by injection molding even for the member at high RH content.
