Summary: The invention enables a user to create images with a hand drawn appearance on a digital canvas by using a pointing device. A depth map of the painting can also be generated. The painting and its depth map can be juxtaposed to form an integrated image which can be displayed as a 3D image on a 3D or autostereoscopic monitor. The method only requires a standard pointing device, such as mouse or joystick, for users to perform the drawing. Other sophisticated devices such as light-pen, digital camera, and ultrasonic sensors can also be used.
