Thanks to the emergence of the 3D autostereoscopic display monitor, which is based on the integration of the slanted lenticular array and the flat liquid crystal display, viewers no longer need to wear polarized or coloured spectacles to view 3D images. This new technology provides the added advantage of a significantly broader field of vision than is possible with traditional stereoscopy. There has been much interest to develop a commercial 3D television (3DTV) service that handles both end-to-end and backward compatibility issues, but no industrial standard has been established so far.


We are developing a “painless” and economical solution for the recording, transmission, distribution and viewing of 3D content. The solution is painless because our direct handling of 3D content with existing video chains can provide the 3D visual experience with just an autostereoscopic television. On the production side, each scene is captured using an array of traditional cameras, each taking a snapshot of the scene from a unique direction. The resulting images are packaged for broadcasting and recorded with existing channels (such as UHF and DVB), standards (e.g., PAL, NTSC and MPEG) and devices (e.g., VCR, VCD and DVD).

Our system includes hardware for both production and display. The latter can be packaged as a set-top box or simply merged with the autostereoscopic display to form a standalone 3D television. A standalone DSP solution is currently available for multi-view 3D content to be decoded from existing video chains and displayed on autostereoscopic monitors. We are now working on translating the design to reconfigurable devices such as FPGA.
