Current image coding standards, JPEG and JPEG-2000, are known to be far too complex and power -consuming for Internet image viewing for cross-platform products, particularly for handheld devices. In addition, there are no efficient and effective algorithms for real-time image and video encryption for Internet communication applications. The new chaos-based technology aims at improving these practical aspects.


Chaos theory is a special dynamical systems theory that has great potential in innovative technological development for some IT products, especially encryption and secure communication devices. Our group has developed chaos-based image encryption, a new technology on real-time secure image and video communications. It uses special feature of chaos that has an extremely simple topology, yet generates extremely complex dynamics. It is proven to be a fast, lean, and cost-effective (with low computing power) and adopt to an easy-to-operate approach to Internet imaging with very high security. As the dynamic feature of interactive imaging requires a new dynamical encryption method rather than conventional static encryption techniques, the dynamical chaos theory provides a promising solution to satisfy this practical and crucial requirement.
