微波及毫米波四次諧波混頻器

IP Title
微波及毫米波四次諧波混頻器
Summary

The ever increasing demands for higher data rate wireless transmission for video conferencing, mobile internetworking and multi-media streaming have driven the employment of complex envelope modulation methods (e.g. WCDMA, OFDM and QAM) in the current 3G and next generation mobile systems. This trend is especially challenging to microwave power amplifier designs since the increases in channel bandwidth and peak-to-average power ratio always come with severe nonlinearity, resulting in poor efficiency. Intensive research efforts have been spent on amplifier linearization to prolong the talk-time. The effective methods, however, involve complicated, costly and bulky circuitries. Despite the efforts spent, the approaches that are applicable to handheld devices only provide moderate improvement on linearity. Due to the substantial marketing consideration, mobile handsets are still obliged to operate under a well power back-off condition to meet the linearity specification.

This invention is a novel power amplifier that combines both linearization and efficiency boosting techniques. The devised circuitry mainly consists of two diodes, an inductor, two capacitors and two resistors. It adaptively biases the amplifier, effectively reduces the power leakage at the adjacent channels as well as additionally compensates the amplitude and phase distortions of the transmitted signals. The linearity can be improved under the same microwave/RF output power, while the efficiency can be boosted under the same drawn DC power. Therefore, the average power efficiency can be enhanced while still keeping the operation within the specification.
