Summary

Equipment health monitoring is essential for preventing failures that may cause human injuries or equipment damage. It can also enhance productivity, product quality and the lifetime of machinery. However, existing diagnostic tools cannot detect randomly occurring faults, and are too complex and expensive to use as well. Furthermore, they rely on the vibrations of the machinery to detect their state of health, but the background noise always affects the accuracy of the readings.


The Smart Asset Maintenance System (SAMS) is developed to provide an effective, low-cost, portable and easy-to-use monitoring and diagnostic tool for equipment preventive maintenance. SAMS can detect periodically and randomly occurring faults through either direct listening to the equipment operating sound for routine maintenance or an intensive analysis for research purpose. By applying the technology, such as the Active Noise Cancellation, we have also developed the Smart Ear, which can remove background noise and pick up vibrations of the machine accurately.

Technology Application

It is widely applicable to industries such as air conditioning, production lines, lifts and escalators, transportation and marine transport. SAMS can be used for many industrial machines, such as traction motors on trains, chillers in buildings, water pumps, stacker cranes for logistics and warehouse, press rollers for offset printing machinery, beverage production lines, and milling machines, etc.

Our clients include MTR (monitoring of traction motors on underground trains), Swire Properties (monitoring of the chillers that provide cool air to shopping malls), Swire-Coca Cola (monitoring of beverage filling machines), and CLP Power (monitoring of coal milling machines), Hong Kong Airport Authority, Cathay Pacific Catering Services (HK) Limited, Graphics Arts Association of Hong Kong etc.
