Method and Apparatus for Driving Reflective Bistable Cholestric Displays

Summary
This is about a new scheme for driving reflective bistable cholesteric displays (BCDs). It relies on fast switching from the planar state to the focal conic (FC) state, the two stable states in BCDs. The new scheme allows BCDs be driven using simpler electrical wave forms, and also making line addressing speed faster. Conventional BCDs have the problems of requiring high voltage, being relatively slow in scanning, requiring more complicated wave forms and drive electronics, the contrast ratio of the dynamic driving scheme being very sensitive to the amplitude of the evolution voltage, requiring specially aligned BCDs, or being slow in switching.
Technology Benefits
1. No power consumption in refreshing display
2. Fast switching between planar and focal conic states
3. Simpler electrical wave forms
4. Easy to manufacture
Technology Application
- Displays used in pagers, cellular phones, personal data banks, and so on
