Summary
Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and carbon monoxide (CO) in the air are contaminants and are harmful to human health. Methods have been developed to eliminate the contaminants. Supported metal catalysts are found to be effective in low-temperature oxidation of CO and hydrocarbons and selective oxidation of propylene.

They usually comprise of nano-sized metal particles attached to a metal oxide support. However, the low catalytic activity at low temperatures and the short life cycle of catalysts make conventional supported metal catalysts undesirable for indoor air purification.

The new method is related to supported metal catalysts with nanostructures that can oxidize CO in the absence of UV illumination with extended lifetime. Such novel catalytic material is capable of oxidizing CO, destroying VOCs and kill and degrade airborne microorganisms (e.g. bacteria and fungi) without using UV lamp irradiation. In addition, the catalyst is able to work at room temperature, ranging from 25'C and 200'C, and can also be functional from 15'C to 500'C. Furthermore, it is highly active for an extended lifetime of at least about 9000 hours of operation without requiring regeneration. Regeneration can be achieved by simple washing and drying in an oven. A prototype has been developed integrating the nanotechnology into a dehumidifier.
