Summary
The invented double-balanced quadrature-input quadrature-output divider (QIQOD) is based on conventional multiplier-based regenerative dividers but employs four different feedback loops with appropriate phase shifts. By making use of quadrature phase outputs from any quadrature signal generator, the invented QIQOD provides smaller and better-matched input loading and smaller 3rd harmonics. In addition, the invented QIQOD provides a mechanism to achieve an output IQ phase sequence that is inherently tracked with the input IQ phase sequence.

A prototype QIQOD with inductive loads has been successfully demonstrated to operate at a frequency of 8.5 GHz and a supply voltage as low as 0.9V in TSMC 0.18-µm CMOS process. An image rejection of -62 dBc is measured at QIQOD output while consuming 7.2 mW.

A second prototype of two QIQOD train based on the invention but with resistive loads has been designed and fabricated to demonstrate the phase sequence tracking feature. Simulation shows that the output IQ phase sequence can track with the input IQ phase sequence automatically.
