Single Inductor Multiple-Input Multiple-Output Switching Converter and Method of Use
- Summary
- Battery-operated portable equipment requires battery power management system for switching between battery and external power source. While prior implementation requires separate power converters and power multiplexers such system, this invention provides a DC-DC converter that allows multiple power sources to be multiplexed through only one inductor.
The invention is a component-efficient battery power management system using a single inductor multiple-input multiple-output (SIMIO) switching converter. In the new system, power regulation, battery charging and power mutiplexing can all be integrated. The system complexity, area and manufacturing cost are therefore significantly reduced.
With SIMIO, the system can perform high efficiency battery charging and power regulation at the same time which cannot be done by prior arts.
This invention is particularly advantageous if applied in electronic appliance, such as, but not limited to, a battery operated portable electronic device using one or multiple rechargeable batteries.
