Modernization of Chinese Medicine : From Clinical Efficacy to Drug Production - Two Innovative Formulae for Comprehensive Research

Summary

The Hong Kong Consortium for Globalization of Chinese Medicine, consisting of the six universities (HKBU, CityU, CUHK, HKU, PolyU and HKUST) and pooling together the expertise and strength of each individual university, forms a wide collaborative research platform, which offers a wonderful opportunity for the success of a comprehensive research on modernization of Chinese medicine. Through this project, The Consortium has conducted comprehensive research on the quality control, biological activities and clinical efficacy of two innovative formulae: (i) sleep disorder and (ii) post-stroke rehabilitation.

a) Sleep disorder

Objective: To evaluate the efficacy of a Chinese herbal formula among the Chinese adult with primary insomnia over a period of four weeks on both subjective and objective sleep quality. Methods: This double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled trial (RCT) enrolled 162 primary insomniac subjects. Subjects received either four weeks Chinese herbal formula or placebo. Efficacy was evaluated by both subjective and objective measurement of the sleep parameters. Results: The treatment group had good improvement in sleep including in sleep latency. The herbal product was well tolerated with no major adverse events.

b) Post-stroke Rehabilitation Formula

Objective: To investigate the efficacy and safety of the innovative herbal formula in post-stroke rehabilitation. Methods: A double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled trial conducted at 6 hospitals of 2 universities in Hong Kong, targeted at 300 patients recruitment. The patient recruitment is still ongoing.
