Catalytic and Regioselective Hydroalkenylation of Aromatic Alkenes and Alpha-Alkenes: Preparation of Unsymmetrical 1,1-Disubstituted Alkenes using a Transition Metal Catalyst

Summary
The invention relates to compounds and catalytic reactions to the production of 1,1-disubstituted alkenes or joining the two alkenes at their 2-position, starting from 2 equivalents of the aromatic alkenes (homodimerization) or two different alkenes (heterodimerization) over the production of typical internal disubstituted alkenes or monosubstituted alkenes.

Methods of the invention may comprise combining those chemical feedstock (produced metric mega ton scale every year, e.g., aromatic alkenes and monosubstituted alkenes) in the presence of a transition metal catalyst (e.g., a group 9-11 transition metal catalyst) to form various 1,1-disubstituted alkenes.

Reaction products of the present invention may be valuable as intermediates and/or products in chemical, pharmaceutical and polymer research, such as carbonyl compounds production by combined with conventional oxidation procedures and higher substituted alkenes by combined with olefin-cross metathesis technology. Also, methods of the invention may be useful as fragment coupling reactions in complex molecule synthesis. Moreover, methods of the invention may include the use of reagents which, under reaction conditions known in the art, may have been unreactive, i.e., may not have been able to form the reaction product. The reagents used in the invention may be relatively lower in cost than in other methods. The invention also allowed joining the two alkenes in atom economic way, no net atom lost from the starting alkenes to produce products, it took the place of traditional methods using stoichiometric amount of 2-alkenyl metal nucleophiles and halides, overall helped to reduced the time and cost for preparation, purification steps and waste disposal problem. The invention can be carried out at ambient temperature without the need of high/low temperature or pressurized reactors.
