Noninvasive Measurement of Arterial Blood Pressure Using Radial Pulse

Summary
Radial pulse, which can be felt at the wrist, is one of the most important diagnostic signals both in Western and Traditional Chinese Medicine. A method to determine arterial blood pressure of a subject using the radial pulse and simultaneously recorded ECG is disclosed. Apparatus is provided for monitoring radial pulse versus time at a selected location on the subject’s body, such as a wrist, by a mechanical sensor. Timing information extracted from ECG and radial pulse waveform can be used to determine the blood pressure. After proper calibration with standard sphygmomanometer, the invented method can provide beat-by-beat continuous measurement of the blood pressure for prolonged period of time. This would provide a simple non-invasive and portable system for clinical monitoring in many cardiovascular diseases.
