New Class of Antitussive Components Isolated from Traditional Chinese Medicinal Herb and the Herbal Extracts

- This invention provided a new class of antitussive components different from existing antitussive agents or those under development. These antitussive agents include four novel components isolated from traditional Chinese medicinal (TCM) herb and three novel synthetic compounds prepared by semi-syntheses of one of the said isolated novel antitussive compounds. Based on the present invention this new class of antitussive agents has strong antitussive effects, whilst the mechanism of their antitussive effect is different from those of existing antitussive agents. Therefore, they are most likely not producing opioid-like addictive effect, and thus may be developed as useful antitussive agents in the treatment of coughing in a patient in need thereof. In addition, different extracts containing the antitussive components have also been prepared from this TCM herb and proven to produce compatible antitussive effect.
